Conditions change fast. Check local guidance and swim within your limits.

Share conditionsChop on lakes is primarily driven by wind speed and fetch (the distance wind travels over water). Larger lakes with longer fetch produce bigger waves. Sheltered areas near shores often have calmer conditions.
Fetch is the distance wind travels over open water. Longer fetch means more wave energy builds up. Shorelines on the windward side (where wind is blowing from) are typically calmer than leeward sides.
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals. If there's a moderate or high algae risk, check for local signage. Avoid swimming if you see scum, foam, or green/blue discoloration.
Water clarity (visibility depth) affects how well you can see underwater and how easily others can see you. Higher clarity is generally safer. Clarity can drop after rain or during algae blooms.
Lakes often have motorboat and sailboat activity. Higher boat traffic means more wake waves and the need to be visible. Consider wearing a bright swim cap and staying in designated swimming areas.
