A series of pools at the bottom of a waterfall. Was a famous spot in Victorian times and visited by Robert Burns. The slight effort required to get there means it’s pretty much never visited now. The highest plunge pool is only accessible in low water flow conditions. In higher flow, the lower areas provide the coldest jacuzzi in central Scotland! A rewarding varied walk to get there, with a nearby abandoned railway viaduct as well as the popular Rumbling Bridge falls a mile upstream.
Location
Getting there
It’s a 1 mile walk from the lay-by on the A977. (See map pics) walk down hill through a farm and woodland. The path through the woodland is a wide track that traverses the steep slope down to an old bridge. The wooden deck has rotted away, but the bridge is structurally sound if you have a head for heights. If not, you can cross the river by stepping over rocks,. During higher flow, it’s a shallow wade. Follow the bank on the left side up the River Devon 100m past the hydro building.
Accessibility
Do not go when river is is full spate. . Summer months are the best time to go as you’ll be able to cross the river easily and swim in the top plunge pool.
