Frequently asked questions

What do the wave and swell measurements mean?

Wave height refers to wind-driven waves on the surface, while swell height measures longer-period waves from distant weather systems. Swell period (in seconds) indicates wave energy. Longer periods mean more powerful waves.

How is the sea state calculated?

Sea state uses the Beaufort scale (0-12) which combines wind speed and observed wave conditions. For swimming, Beaufort 0-3 typically means calmer conditions, while 4+ indicates increasing chop and waves.

What do the condition ratings mean?

Good (green) means conditions are calm and suitable for most swimmers. Moderate (amber) indicates manageable but more challenging conditions. Poor (red) means conditions are rough and not recommended for most swimmers. Always assess conditions yourself before entering the water.

What about rip currents?

Rip current risk is not shown as a separate indicator on this page. Risk increases with larger wave height and longer swell period. On the beach, look for discoloured or choppy water moving away from shore, lines of foam, or gaps in breaking waves. Check local beach signage and ask lifeguards when present.

What does the 7-day forecast show?

The forecast shows daily wave height, swell height, wind speed, and sun conditions for the week ahead. Each day is colour-coded good/moderate/poor based on expected swimming conditions. Use it to plan ahead, but always check current conditions on the day.
